Why Father Starts With F
Caption
Latin pater. Greek patēr. Persian pedar. English father.
Why the F? Grimm's Law: a regular Germanic sound shift. P→F, T→TH, D→T, K→H.
pater→father, pēs→foot, tres→three, decem→ten, cor→heart.
Short takes
Once you see it you can't unsee it: pisces→fish, pyr→fire, canis→hound. Share your best P→F pair.
Persian kept the original P: pedar, pā (foot). English changed. Sometimes the "odd one out" is the innovator.
